When Nobody's Listening

It's tough when you're an indie artist and you feel like your art isn't being seen or heard enough. We all crave that feeling of knowing that our art is being appreciated by someone other than you. We don't NEED that feeling, but it is nice. So what do we do when nobody's listening? Let's talk about it.

It's funny that I'm writing this article because right now it feels like nobody's really listening to my music or watching my videos. I haven't figured out a way to get more people to listen yet, but I have figured out what to do when nobody's listening.

Get the bread

You don't have to have music streams to make money, although it could help lol. But if you aren't making money from streams, working a regular job is an obvious way to keep a steady income. I get that life isn't about money, but unfortunately we all need it to live. You can't even die for free in this world, someone's gotta pay funeral costs! Learn how to really manage your finances, that way you can invest more into your art.

Be active

Go out and take a walk. Go ride a longboard, or a bike. Go out to that new bar or restaurant that just opened up with your friends. Basically I'm saying just go do stuff! You can't just create art 24/7 even though you really want to. You gotta live a little!

Plan and Plot

Use your brain and creativity to take your time and put something together. Whether it's an Album with visuals and everything, or a new merch drop with designs that you took your time on. Take your time and think about what you want to do next, and how you want to do it. You can have more control over how it comes across to your listeners when they finally do listen. Does it sound well mixed and well thought out or does it sound rushed and a little empty? Something I have to ask myself as well.

Build relationships

This term can mean many things. In your home life, that's taking time to talk to your family and friends, doing things for them, or hanging out with them. In the marketing world, that's building your relationships with the few people who already do listen to your music. Spend time figuring out how to do nice things for your listeners, cuz for some reason people like it when you're nice to them lol.

Someone is always listening

Trust me, even when you think no one's listening, someone is. Not in a scary way, but even when you feel like nobody's paying attention, your art finds its a way into somebody's eyes and ears. The thing is, you're not always going to know about it. When I listen to music, I don't go and DM that artist every time their song just came on, that would be wierd lol (although I do get the urge to hit them up all the time).

So when you make art, just know that somebody's always going to see and hear it, even when you think nobody is. Spend time honing your skills and creating more art and living more life!
